Help me choose a hosting type

  • Shared hosting:

The most widely used hosting type, shared hosting is so-called because multiple hosting accounts will be hosted on and share the resources (RAM etc.) of a single web server.

Generally, shared hosting is the cheapest paid hosting type.

  • VPS hosting:

Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting, also known as Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS) hosting, allows each account hosted on a server to be effectively independent from one another, and have its own software, RAM etc.

Generally, VPS hosting also allows greater configuration of server options than shared hosting.

  • Reseller hosting:

Reseller hosting allows the owner of the hosting (you) to resell all or parts of it to other people.

For example, some web design companies buy reseller hosting and then resell hosting services on that hosting to their [the web design company's] clients.

Help me choose an operating system

  • Linux:

The most widely used operating system, Linux runs on the majority of shared hosting accounts.

Linux hosting primarily supports Apache, MySQL, and Perl/PHP/Python (via implementation of a LAMP stack).

Generally, Linux hosting is cheaper than the equivalent Windows hosting due to its [Linux hosting's] use of open source software.

  • Windows:

Windows hosting primarily supports the use of Windows based software including ASP.NET, the .NET Framework, and Microsoft SQL Server.

Generally, Windows hosting is more expensive than the equivalent Linux hosting due to its [Windows hosting's] use of proprietary licensed software.
